As an international student studying in the UK, finding suitable accommodation can be a major challenge. When I arrived in Exeter, I faced a similar problem. Therefore, I would like to share some tips that I learned during my search for Student Accommodation.
Firstly, it is important to know what is included in the rent of the student accommodation. When you rent a student accommodation, make sure to ask about what is included in the rent. Some houses may include utility bills such as water and electricity grids in the rent, while others may not. In general, the rent alone does not cover all expenses, and tenants need to pay utility bills separately. On the day of check-in, you will need to open an account for water and electricity. You also need to pay the local government tax (Council Tax), but if you are a student, you can get a Council Tax Exemption Letter from your school, which is tax-free. Remember that the tax-free time is the same as your student letter time.
Secondly, the house inspection process is essential when renting a whole house in the UK. An inventory inspection is necessary in the formal procedure of renting student apartments in the UK. The landlord will usually find a regular company to do the inventory, and the tenant needs to pay the fee. The purpose of the list is to check all the housing conditions, including walls, floors, glass, windows, doors, kitchen cabinets, bathrooms, toilets, wash basins, furniture, and gardens (if any). Everything in the room will be inspected and marked before you move in, so that you can compare it with the list after your contract is over, and have proof in case of disputes with the landlord.
Thirdly, before renting a student apartment in Exeter, make sure to check that the interior is in good condition, with no signs of damp or peeling paint. Central heating is a must, as winters in the UK can be quite cold. Check that the heating is working properly, and that furniture and electrical appliances in the house are functioning properly. Additionally, check for any sign of water leakage in the shower or toilet. If you find any broken or malfunctioning items, make sure to ask the landlord to fix them before you move in.
